Air Force Looks to End 2012 Mountain West Bowl Run with Win

By Ron Richards,

The 2012 Mountain West Conference’s five-game college bowl season comes to a close with Air Force’s contest against Rice in Saturday’s Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl.

The Falcons will be looking to conclude the MWC post-season with a victory to take the conference record to 2-3 in 2012 bowl contests. The league’s lone win to date was Boise State’s triumph over Washington, 28-26; in other bowl games, Nevada lost to Arizona, 49-48; San Diego State was on the short end of a 23-6 score against former MWC member, Brigham Young; and Fresno State, the last team Air Force played during its 2012 regular season, lost to SMU 43-10.

Air Force has played in 22 bowl games during its 56 seasons of varsity football and sports a 10-11-1 bowl record coming into Saturday’s game with Rice. The Falcons have been a member of a conference since 1980 (Western Athletic Conference from 1980-1998 and the Mountain West starting in 1999).

AFA has played in three of the nine Armed Forces Bowl games to date, having won once. That victory, a 47-20 win over Houston, came in Air Force’s last appearance in Fort Worth in 2009.
