An Early Texas Shootout at Billy Bob’s for Air Force, Houston

Fort Worth, Texas, December 27, 2009 – A Texas shootout is anticipated Thursday in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl when Houston’s top-ranked passing offense goes against the nation’s fourth best rushing attack in Air Force.  However on Sunday night there was a preliminary shootout of sorts between the teams at Billy Bob’s, the world’s largest Honky Tonk in the historic Fort Worth Stockyards.  Billy Bob’s is the 127,000-square foot facility where such musical icons as the Gatlin Brothers, Waylon Jennings, Jamie Fricke, Willie Nelson, George Strait, Garth Brooks, Ringo Star, the Beach Boys and Gloria Estefan were among the many headline performers that have performed on the showroom stage.  On Sunday night, Chris Whatley (pictured with Houston linebacker coach Leon Burtnett) directed a quick draw competition between the schools. Houston lineman Anderson put the ‘cold’ in cold calling

By Brian Hilderbrand, www.armedforcesbowl.com

Fort Worth, Texas, December 28, 2009 – As one of a dozen out-of-state players on the University of Houston roster, and the only one hailing from Alaska, offensive lineman Jaryd Anderson made the longest trek to the Lone Star State.  A second-team all-conference player at South Anchorage High School, Anderson also made arguably the most inventive one.  Anderson, who will line up against the Air Force Academy when the Cougars meet the Falcons in Thursday’s Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl at Amon G. Carter Stadium, used some good old-fashioned self-promotion to get noticed by the Houston coaching staff.  “It’s very hard to get recruited out of Alaska,” Anderson said Monday after the Cougars’ first practice here for the seventh annual Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl.  “I had someone help put together a bio and a highlight film and we put it online and waited to see what happened.” Continue Reading

Air Force Enjoys Break from ‘Regular’ Routine

By Jim Benton, www.armedforcesbowl.com

Fort Worth, Texas, December 28, 2009 – Air Force Academy football players are starting to enjoy how the ‘other’ half of the regular college world lives as they prepare this week for Thursday’s seventh annual Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl that will be played at Amon G. Carter Stadium.  Stepping away from their regular military academy routine, the Falcons went through their third practice on Monday at Kennedale High School and since the Air Force Academy is on break for the holidays, the players have the rare opportunity to concentrate on nothing but football.  Air Force players don’t have to be concerned about early wake up calls, trigonometry, calculus or aeronautical engineering assignments or military duties.  “It’s a lot nicer,” junior defensive back Reggie Rembert (pictured) said.  “We don’t have to wake up at 6:30, we get a little more sleep and get to have a little more fun.”

Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl Return Suits Air Force

By Jim Benton, www.armedforcesbowl.com

Air Force Academy, Colo., December 21, 2009 – The Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex and the state of Texas are bountiful recruiting targets for college football teams.

That’s one of the reasons Air Force is pleased to be playing for the third consecutive year in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl.

Even though the Falcons have different recruiting standards because of academic and military demands, Air Force has been successful attracting players from Texas to enroll at the Academy.

There are 23 players on the Air Force roster from Texas, the most from any state.  Eight projected starters hail from the Lone Star State.
