Difficult Task for Falcons, Bears

By Troy Phillips,

It would be difficult to top the final six minutes of last year's Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl on that messy day at Amon Carter Stadium. But it would make sense.

Air Force (8-5) and California (7-5) will have history in such matters when they meet December 29 at 1 p.m. in the 13th Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl at TCU.

Both teams' coaches spent Tuesday at the massive Lockheed Martin Aeronautics division complex, meeting with local media for the bowl's first news conference since the matchup was announced December 6.

“Sonny” Days

By Phil Collin,

It’s not uncommon to see a college football roll into a town to play a bowl game with a new or interim coach after a disappointing finish to a regular season.

California nearly faced that prospect after the Golden Bears concluded a 7-5 season while battling through the Pacific-12 Conference slate.  But just when the rumors surrounding Coach Sonny Dykes leaving for another gig, along came that sweet sound of a contract extension.

Overlooked, but Accomplished

By Phil Collin,

One headline before the 2015 college football season proclaimed that Troy Calhoun might be the most overlooked coach in the United States.

Sure, that could be the case at a service academy, but after nine years at Air Force, it’s hard to overlook Calhoun’s accomplishments.

The Air Force graduate has had only two losing seasons and after the second one, a 2-10 campaign in 2013, the Falcons rebounded with a 10-3 season, including a bowl victory.
